TOYS No.2, art print

My great grandmother was 96 when I drew her, a woman of indomitable force, facing mortality and filled yet with life. She had seen a century of change and still her eyes could mesmerize you to silence.

“Agnes wrote every line in her face
and at ninety-six, the Russian novel
of her century neared its final page.

With her at Freeborn County Hospital
I did the only thing I could, I drew her.
I drew her the way I would draw

a geological formation.  I drew her
out of the shell of her finality,
and we both sat and patiently waited.”
